preschool hunt

this what has been keeping me busy most of the day today. i'm searching for possible pre-schools for aquim. he'll be turning 3 this july and as dictated by society, i guess he should be in a school na.

we are not yet really thinking much about this, matter of factly. we still think that 3 years old is too young for "school" school. during our times, we only have kindergarten before entering big school. these days, even a newborn can go to baby/toddler play school.

but as a mom, i often feel like i am not giving aquim a chance to develop his full potentials. i feel and i think that he can still can learn a lot given that there's someone who will guide him. yes i believe that, that is our role as his parents and no, i am not taking preschool (or school, as i may say) as an offloader of our responsibilities as his parents.

i teach him, in the best way that i can, as often that i can. kaya lang, i don't know if i am doing it right. i didn't have a unit about child development heee.

i'm dreading nga the prerequisite preschool assessment eh. will aquim be able to pass kaya? hehehe he can count 1-10 sometimes 1-14. but nagkakamali pa. sometimes, he just says numbers randomly. more often, pabaligtad pa magcount. he'll say 1 , 2 , 3, 4, 5.. and then 4, 3 .. hehe.. or 10 , 9 , 8...

he can't sing the alphabet. you can tell by the tone that he is singing the alphabet song but the letters are jumbled. haha.. but he can tell letters A, B, C, M, O, Q, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y. he learned the letters that he wanted to learn. we didn't teach him to memorize the alphabet chronologically.

he learns at his own pace. we don't pressure him to study, most of the times. most of the times and not all the time, kasi sometimes, when i hear other moms' stories that his son/daughter can already do differential calculus or can recite rizal's mi ultimo adios, i prod him to study his alphabet and to count.

last tuesday, i was on leave (again). aquim and i went to shang and i let him play in the gymboree. when he saw the kids inside the classroom, he really wanted to join them. i told his dad that aquim really wanted to be in school na. before this, aquim kept on telling us that he wanted to be at a school. he wants to go to school. i guess he just misses being with other kids.

anyways, as i've said, aquim going to school is not in our immediate plans. so i didn't bother looking/researching for play schools/pre schools within our area. so now, i'm thinking of enrolling him on a summer class muna, to see if he'll be adjusted on a school set up before going all the way and paying big bucks for an entire school year.

challenge is to find a good preschool within our community or within pasig area.

3rd hand smoke

it's not enough that we, non-smokers, suffer from second-hand smoke. now, there's 3rd hand smoke. i've read it a few months back from reader's digest. now it's on yahoo news.

~o~
When a cigarette burns, nicotine is released in the form of a vapor that collects and condenses on indoor surfaces such as walls, carpeting, drapes and furniture, where it can linger for months, said the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Our study shows that when this residual nicotine reacts with ambient nitrous acid, it forms carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines, or TSNAs", said Hugo Destaillats, a corresponding author of the study.

"TSNAs are among the most broadly acting and potent carcinogens present in unburned tobacco and tobacco smooke", he said.

The most like human exposure to TSNAs is through either inhalation of dust of the contact of skin with carpet or clothes -- making third-hand smoke particularly dangerous to infants and toddlers.

Opening a window or turning on a fan to air out a room while a cigarette burns does not eliminate the hazard of third-hand smoke. Smoking outdoors doesn't help much either.

"Smoking outside is better than smoking indoors but nicotine residues will stick to a smoker's skin and clothing", said Lara Gunder, a co-author of the study.

"Those residues follow a smoker back inside and get spred everywhere. The biggest rish is to young children", he said.

"Dermal uptake of the nicotine through a child's skin is likely to occur when the smoker returns and if nitrous acid is in the air, which it usually is, then TSNAs will be formed."

Substantial levels of TSNAs were also found in the truch of a heavy smoker, the study s ays, adding that most-vehicle engines emit some nitrous acid that can infiltrate the passenger compartment of a vehicle.

Researchers from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory led the study, which they say, is the first to quantify the reactions of third-hand smoke with nitrous acid.

honestly, minsan i'd like to put aquim na inside a bubble ball. hay. jason and i don't smoke. but we live in an apartment and our next door neighbor smokes. that's why nga our house is always close nowadays. it triggers his asthma attacks. both his lolos smoke. not while aquim is around, but if this study is true, then it affects aquim din pala. kaya pala feeling ko nagsmoke pa rin ang ang mga smokers kahit tapos na sila mag smoke.

humbug

few days (8 days to be exact) before christmas and i still haven't shopped for a gift (save for the obligatory gifts for our department's kris kringle). i don't know. each year, i feel like the "spirit" of christmas is slowly rubbing off me.

it no longer thrills me. yeah, there's the 13th month pay (and other bonuses to some) but... i still don't know.

years ago, even before december steps in, i already have my christmas list and almost everybody i know is on that list with their equivalent gift budget. and i cram every weekend to search for the perfect gift for each one. got tired? no budget? maybe.

i feel guilty for my son (we don't give him gifts for christmas, really), for jason cause i really have no plans of buying him a gift. for my mom and dad, i'll just give the customary monetary gifts. for the rest of my relatives. nada. for my godchildren, i'll just give monetary gift also. save for my 3 nieces, i'll probably grab a shirt or dress from the mall.

for my office friends, i don't plan on giving out sana, cause i feel that i'm way past being that charitable and thoughtful. like giving small figurines, coin purse, etc., things that they will find no use of. but due to constant parinig (hehehe), i might. i'm checking out little things lang sana that are functional or edible, just a small token, not too fancy. still not sure.

every year naman kasi, i get this amount and they i'll end up spending all for gifts. as in. so feeling ko, tapos na ko dun.

for the christmas decor, we have christmas lights and the christmas balls/lantern. all year round naman andon na yun hehehe

noche buena, if ever we'll have our own (kasi nakikikain lang kami), i'll just order from restos. if only i can afford to have a caterer, i will. or spend it in a posh hotel. i don't want to stress my self come dec24.

i know i should be building up family traditions for aquim. childhood christmas stories that he will remember when he grows up. eh..sa ngayon, i'm just telling him that christmas is papa jesus' birthday. that's it. i don't want to make it too commercialized. i hope i'm doing it right.

yaya ana

we no longer have a yaya.

she was our first yaya, our first household staff, and she's gone.

kahit na she's at fault, she still broke my heart. somehow. of course, i know we can't have her forever, but i was not expecting that we will part our ways the way it did.

she had her day off last sunday, nov1. promised to be back on the same day. instead went back last wednesday night. without texting/calling us on those days she went AWOL.

and that was the fourth time that she did it.

we, actually, she and jason, no longer had a lengthy conversation. cause they already had that on her 3rd offense. jason just asked her if she still wants to be with us, she said that she was planning to tell us she wanted to leave. so be it.

god. it was stressful. lahat na lang kinakastress-an ko hehehe. well it must have been much harder on my part than on her. because it was just my first time to let go. siya, she has done that several times ago, part of her job.

it's really that hard not to be attached to your household staff. kahit na sabihing helper lang yun, that we're not related. still, we used to live in the same roof, used to care (i believe) to the same child, my child. o diba, how can i be not attached somehow?

buti na lang, aquim is not that attached to her. i read some na naistress din ang kids pag nagpapaalam ang yaya. buti na lang.

hay. anyways. bukas wala na 'to. heheh ngayon, wanted yaya na kami uli :)

bilingual kid

i thought i'll be raising a bilingual kid. i used to think he'll be having english as his primary language.

but im wrong.

well, initially, we spoke to him in english. the first words he knew were english. but after i had a yaya and got back to work, he kind of switched to having tagalog as his primary language.

the things he usually say in english are now being said in tagalog. rain is now ulan. water is now tubig. light is now ilaw.. and a whole lot more.

sometimes he's taglish but more often, he speaks in tagalog.

have no problem with that. i'm just worried that it might affect his confidence while interacting with english speaking kids / adults.

i have witnessed a few times when he wasn't able to answer some questions because he doesn't seem to understand it because it was asked in english.

hmmm...

just then, aquim said, awesome!

we can still do it! hehehehe

22

i just spent near 22 hours at the office. hayy... muntik ko ng mabilang ang mga curtain beads na to hehehe

when i got home, pagising na si aquim. i thought aquim wont let me sleep. but luckily i was able to shoo him off hehehe

when i woke up, its way past lunch time. i still thought of reporting back to work today. i was telling aquim, i miss him because we werent able to play last night. told him i only came back this morning. of which he replied, "me meeting ka?"

hehehe

i replied, yeah.....

and decided not to report for work today :)

it broke my heart

something happened last night and it broke my heart.

it was not our first away-bati moment. we had our bouts. kaya lang mga kiyeme lang yun na tipong lambingan lang or dahil lang sa kakulitan nya (at ako). but i think it was the first time na nagtampo si aquim over something na feeling ko hinde petty. at nabother din talaga ako.

i did not mean to hurt him, i was just telling his daddy matter of factly, in the same manner like how i tell his daddy if he does something good.

pero, he can understand those things na pala. hayyy.....

just another update

this is just an update to remind everyone who 'regularly'(?) reads my blog that i'm still here ...

medyo busy lang and nagkasakit kasi ang aking unico hijo kaya hinde nakakainternet.

aquim had pneumonia. nagkaubo ubo lang siya na parang nasasamid nung week of october 20-25. sobrang dalang and hinde regular so i can not tell kung iuubo ba talaga. pero by october 25, pinacheck up namin siya and was given loviscol. that night, nag grabe lalo ang ubo nya and nilalagnat na. after two days, i informed his pedia that his condition did not improve a bit, so we switched to ambrolex. by wednesday night, october 29, we rushed to the ER of medical city. sobrang wasted na kasi si aquim. grabe.

thru x-ray and blood test, it was confirmed that he had viral pneumonia. salamat sa Diyos at hinde naman kami na-admit. we were given antibiotics, for 7 days yun. so ang aking kina eexcited-an na trick or treat ay hinde nangyari kasi kami ay nasa bahay lang. pati nung all saint's and all soul's day.

anyway, another news, we now have our yaya, si yaya ana. we got her lat november 16. kakilala siya ng yaya ng pinsan ni jason. so far so good. nasa adjustment period pa kami. sanay na naman siya na mamasukan so the adjustment is more on our side. kasi hinde naman ako sanay na me helper. kahit nung mga bata pa kami, wala naman kaming helper, so imagine kung pano ako napapraning na bantayan ang mga ginagawa nya.

we had her undergone a pre-employment check up, xray and hepa test. i'll get the results today. hopefully okay ang results. we're still on the process of securing our house kaya hinde ko pa rin maiwan totally ang house and si aquim sa kanya. hopefully before the year ends, pwede na akong maka alis ng house and iwan silang dalawa. dry run period ba.

with my job hunting, wala pang balita. kasi nga kahit na may yaya kami, hinde ko pa rin naman sila maiwan kaya hinde pa rin ako makapag hanap ng work. and nasabay pa nga na nagiging sakitin si aquim these past few weeks. anyway, i just had a single interview before maER si aquim. and wala pang balita. sana next week, i can really focus on this. mas feeling ko kaya ngayon, i'm really useless! haha kasi naman yung mga household chores ko me gumagawa na ngayon, feeling ko talaga tambay na tambay na ako.

and lastly, i have painted 3 more subjects. a flower, flamingoes and a hotair balloon. will try to post the pics tomorrow.

so there.

paint my world

to keep myself a little more busy, hinde naman sa hinde ako busy. ano lang 'to, parang some form of 'jolen time'. hehehe at dahil pangarap ko nga nung bata pa ako na maging artist at maging painter (sa pag aakala ko na madali lang magpaint), sinubukan kong tuparin ang isa sa aking mga childhood dreams. and here's a couple of my first masterpieces. nakss...

mommy: baby, what's this (refering to the gumamela)?

aquim: fawerrr (flower)

mommy: very good.

mommy: e eto baby, what's this (eagle)?

aquim: DUCKKKK!

mommy: ngek!

of lolas and lolo

Sometimes, it's really hard to keep my ground on how we would want to raise our Aquim around his doting Lolas and Lolo (lolo, singular, ‘cause I’m only speaking about Aquim’s grandparents on my side. Aquim has not spent that much time with his grandparents on Jason’s side, so I cannot say about them). I'm not complaining, just...well...I’m just...well.. basta!

Of course, I really appreciate their love and concern for Aquim, but there are times that their way is not the way how we want it to be.

Case in point, they want to give all those stuff that I think, and I believe most moms my age would agree, is not yet fitting for his age. Say chocolates, candies and all those sweets. At first, I was really stern about this, I don’t want to mess up his baby taste buds yet. But most specially, I would want sana to raise a healthy eater. I want Aquim sana to favour good food over the not so good ones (personally I love sweets that’s why I can’t say that sweets are bad food heee). I want him to be able to enjoy all kinds of food din naman. Cakes, ice cream, chocolates. But later na lang sana. Not at this stage. But then, I gave in. I allowed Aquim to taste little by little those sweet stuff.

On disciplining Aquim, when he has tantrums, I would say, no one is brave enough to countermand me, good thing. When Aquim and I have the fits, his Lolo and Lolas are there, siding by me. So we still see eye to eye on this. I’m dreading the day when one of them would stood against me. Hay…

With Aquim’s Lolo and Lola, I would say, I really don’t have that much problem. I know Nanay and Tatay and Auntie appreciate and understand how we want Aquim to grow up. I’m having more of this issue with my own Lola.

You see, my Lola is around 70 years old. So explaining things to her is quite an act to do. Of course she can still hear me, she can still understand things clearly, but she’s quite sensitive.

Everytime that Aquim is with her, she would give him bread. Never mind if Aquim has just taken his milk and is already full. Okay lang. Not bad, ‘di ba? But she is manning her store, selling things, holding a lot of things, holding money. And she would hold the bread, and put it on Aquim’s mouth. Yay! All those germs. So really, I’m not wondering why Aquim has this intermittent thing with diarrhea.

I would tell her, ''la busog pa yan. Wag mo na lang muna subuan’. She’d say ‘konte lang naman’. And would continue to do so. Hay.. I don’t have the heart kasi to tell her, ‘'la madumi ang kamay mo, maghugas ka muna’.

Just yesterday, I was feeding Aquim pan cakes. She sat beside us, holding french fries and about to give it to Aquim. I told her, ‘'la bawal yan ke aquim kasi mamantika’. She stood up without saying a word. I know she took it against me. ‘Cause that was not the first time that I turned down the food that she wants to give Aquim. Earlier that day, she wants to feed Aquim ‘ginataang langka with bagoong’. I also told her, ‘'la bawal yan, me bagoong’. She replied: ‘dami naming bawal!’. And walked away.

There are a lot of other things, and sometimes, she just sneaks up on me. heee just this morning, he was able to give Aquim chocolate porridge. Hay..

I don’t know. Sometimes, I’m thinking, what if I just let her do what she wants to. But then again, this concerns Aquim. And I am her mother and I have to stand to what I believe is right and good for him. I’m just reminding myself that giving in once in a while is okay, just to make everybody happy. But at the end of the day, if something’s wrong with Aquim, I’m still the one who’s responsible for him because I’m his mother. I’ll just content my self that lola will somehow forget all those ‘bawal yan’ I told her. Heee

hinde kami excited

malapit na ang halloween! yahu! kahapon, nagpunta kami sa mall. wala lang. to buy some stuff. and para makapaglaro si aquim. and para makapasyal lang kami, this is just one of the ways how we bond as a family.

incidentally, i saw these cute halloween outfits for kids! oh wow! tinanong ko si jason, kung pwede ba kaming magtingin ng costume para kay aquim. at baka pwede na rin na maibili na namin sia.

you see, hinde uso dito sa lugar namin ang trick or treak. either with jason's office. it's a good thing that auntie mimi enlisted aquim to join in her company's annual trick or treat activity. it would be his first time! our first time!

ngek!

hinde kami excited.

Sorry ha..

common friend (to jason): kamukhang kamukha talaga ni jolen si aquim (matter of factly), sorry ha..?

me, overhearing it: ano yun, sorry kay jason kasi hinde nya kmukha si aquim, or sorry kasi kamukha ko si aquim?!

.
