how do i nest?

I remember during the early part of my pregnancy, I nested immediately by cleaning and clearing out our pantry. Suddenly I had the urge to throw everything out and have an immaculately bare pantry. People at the house didn't know yet that I am expecting by then.

Then it stopped. By the 7th month, I have the urge to nest again. I nested by trying to organize everything in our house. I am always searching for storage boxes and storage bags and containers so that everything will be in its proper place even pins and tacks.

I am perusing the Pinterest for inspiration for (shared) nursery and for kids' room (for Kid #1) and just pinning like crazy and planning everything in my head what are the to-do's (and to-buy's?) to make the house ready for the coming wee one.

By the time I have to execute those plans, I am too tired. So in reality, I haven't really done anything yet. Haha. And that, my friends, is how I nest.

I am no Martha Stewart and don't expect me to come up with a Pinterest worthy room make over. But in the spirit of sharing a before and after case, this is how the master bedroom looks right now. We are still co-rooming with Kid #1. When he moves out, we will be co-rooming with Kid #2. The bed will just be replaced with a crib but on the other side of the bed.

And here's Kid #1 room right now. Used to be an in-law suite, so that is why there is a bed. Still a longggggg way to go.

Honestly, getting the house ready is stressing me out. That and Kid #1's halloween costume. I am hoping everything will at least be liveable before the wee one arrives.

I have already started last night on organizing our things. I started with my shoes. I bought this shoe organizer and threw away all the boxes that are occupying too much space. Will post pics some other time.

Happy Hump Day!

baked

have you tried baking? i wanted to for the longest time (back in the philippines) but wasn't able to because we didn't have a functional oven then. so when we got here, finally, i got the chance.

the first few months that we were here, i was baking brownies. every week. even twice a week, for a month. no fancy thing though, just store bought brownie mix that i have to mix and put into the oven. sometimes i experiment and put in nuts, choco chips. the house always smells good but then the 3 of us we got tired of eating brownies everyday.

so then late last year, i began to try again. i did the chocolate cheese cupcake turtle. hehehe. anyway, these were the ones from my 1st batch.

my son liked. it i think i was able to bake 4 batches after this (not on the same night though). i baked this on ordinary days. i baked this to g ive out to the carollers. i bake this during our christmas party.

i watch kris tv often, and after watching one of their episodes with erich g baking the butter cupcakes, i did that too. i think the result was not at par as what i was expecting. my son was not a fan, but my husband and brother in law liked it.

and then i did a carrot cake with cream cheese icing for my husband's aunt's birthday. it was good and moist. you can eat it without the icing but i think the icing makes it perfect. i liked it. the birthday girl liked it too.

on that same night, i also baked blueberry muffins. this was also a hit -- with aquim. he'll have it as dessert, as breakfast, as school snack. i was able to bake 3 batches.

for tonight, i'd like to try corn bread. my peg is the corn bread with raspberry sauce and vanilla ice cream from racks at megamall. maybe i should include vanilla and raspberry sauce in my grocery list.

how hot?

okay, just to emphasize and to have a point of comparison (though i know we can not really fully comprehend how hot the sun is, i sometimes wish i am superman so that i can see the sun closely and feel its heat without really killing me, but rather, nourish me wholly, just like superman nga.. er.. where was i?) -- how hot 50,000 degrees celsius is -- just an emission from the sun.

eenie meenie minimo..?

childish - immature or foolish or silly (from ms word thesaurus)

unreasonable - difficult to deal with, irrational, out of proportion (from ms word thesaurus)

rude - impolite, offensive, bad-mannered (from ms word thesaurus)

rudeness (also called impudence or effrontery or unethical) is the disrespect and failure to behave within the context of a society or a group of people's social laws or etiquette. these laws have already unspokenly been established as the essential boundaries of normally accepted behavior. to be unable or unwilling to align one's behavior with these laws known to the general population of what is socially acceptable is to be rude. one example of which is: bullying (from wikipedia).

bullying is a form of abuse. it comprises repeated acts over time that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power with the more powerful individual or group abusing those who are less powerful. the power imbalance may be social power and/or physical power. the victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a target (from wikipedia).

bosses, are you listening?

another article from Yahoo!News.

7 Things Your Boss Should Never Say to You

1. "I pay your salary. You have to do what I say."
Threats and power plays just do not cut it anymore (and they were always a terrible way to manage). ~~ I believe I haven't said these exact words yet. ~~

2. "I don't want to listen to your complaints.
It may be annoying, even painful, but that's why you get the big bucks. And even if a problem absolutely can't be helped, allowing your employees to vent can go a long way toward restoring morale and building loyalty. ~~ Ohhhhh.... Ouch! hehehe ~~

3. "I was here on Saturday afternoon. Where were you?"
This kind of "subtle" pressure to work 24/7 is a good way to burn out your employees. You may choose to work seven days a week. That's your call. But your employees shouldn't have to. ~~ No, i'm not guilty. ~~

4. "Isn't your performance review coming up soon?"
Maybe you're trying to motivate an employee to do a better job. Either way, a statement like this is not only tacky and passive-aggressive, it's ineffective. If you really want to motivate people, consider giving them a stake in the success of your enterprise. Show employees you value them. Let them know what they have to gain by doing a good job. ~~ Not me! Okay, I was tempted, once! ~~

5. "We've always done it this way."
Your employees may actually have a pretty good idea of how to do their jobs. Maybe they know even more than you. Your job as boss is to encourage them to have the energy and motivation to be innovative. In fact, employees who come up with better ways to do things should be celebrated and rewarded. (Hint: Cash is nice.) ~~ Yeah, somehow. ~~

6. "We need to cut costs."
Nothing breeds resentment more than asking employees to tighten their belts while you, to their eyes, are living it up. ~~ Guilty, attendance and punctuality. ~~

7. "You should work better."
Managers need to communicate expectations clearly. Don't assume. Managers need to to give employees the tools they need to do a good job, to set reasonable deadlines, and to offer help if needed. ~~ I'm not sure. ~~

In summary, leaders lead by inspiring, teaching, encouraging, and, yes, serving their employees. Good leaders never need to threaten. So keep your word, set a good example, praise in public, criticize in private, respect your employees' capabilities, give credit where credit is due, learn to delegate, and when you ask for feedback don't forget to respond to it. Being sensitive to other people's feelings is good karma. Leading by example is the best way to lead. The bottom line is that in the workplace, respect, a little tact, and a good attitude go both ways.
~~ Ouch sa attendance lang naman. And tact. Or meron pang iba? ~~

secret to having happy employees?

sure i've posted an entry similar to this... and in summary, that was just to treat them well. here's another advise on having happy employees...

FIRE THE UNHAPPY ONES!

tsk, sana dati ko pa to nabasa! heeee oh well, ako, one thing i learned is if i'm really not that happy in a company, i better resign. kasi there's no use working or not working diba? kaya lang some does not have the balls to resign and find another job. instead they'll whine. and bore the rest of the teams with all their problems and issues about the company and the management. sus. if you can't stand the heat, leave. ganon lang yun.

here's the rest of the article..

The Secret to Having Happy Employees

by Jay GoltzThursday, March 11, 2010
provided by the new york times

About 10 years ago I was having my annual holiday party, and my niece had come with her newly minted M.B.A. boyfriend. As he looked around the room, he noted that my employees seemed happy. I told him that I thought they were.

Then, figuring I would take his new degree for a test drive, I asked him how he thought I did that. "I'm sure you treat them well," he replied.

"That's half of it," I said. "Do you know what the other half is?"

He didn't have the answer, and neither have the many other people that I have told this story. So what is the answer? I fired the unhappy people. People usually laugh at this point. I wish I were kidding.

I'm not. I have learned the long, hard and frustrating way that as a manager you cannot make everyone happy. You can try, you can listen, you can solve some problems, you can try some more. Good management requires training, counseling and patience, but there comes a point when you are robbing the business of precious time and energy.

Don't get me wrong. This doesn't happen a lot. There's no joy in the act of firing someone. And it's not always the employee's fault — there are many bad bosses out there. Bad management can make a good employee dysfunctional. On the other hand, good management will not always make a dysfunctional employee good. And sometimes people who would be great employees somewhere else just don't fit your company, whether it is the type of business or the company culture.

In the worst cases, the problem of a bad fit can have a bigger impact than just one employee's performance. Being in charge does not necessarily mean you are in control, and being in control does not necessarily mean being in charge. Have you ever seen a company or department paralyzed by someone who is unhappy and wants to take hostages? It is remarkable how much damage one person can do. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you watch "The Caine Mutiny." Basically, one guy takes apart the ship. He was unhappy. It only takes one.

This is only my opinion. I don't have a Ph.D., an M.B.A., or even an economics degree. What I do have is a happy company. And that makes me happy. Now I know some people argue that business is about making money, and not everyone has to be happy. That is also an opinion. Everyone has a right to his or her opinion. When you own a company, you also have the right to surround yourself with the people you choose.

I have spent the last year and a half focusing on cutting costs, figuring out how the market has changed, and worrying about the economy. Things seem to be getting better, or perhaps I am just getting used to it.

Either way, I had a good day today. Not because I got a big order, great financial reports or even an employee stopping by to tell me what an awesome boss I am. (That generally doesn't happen. You have to tell yourself. It's a boss thing.) I had a great day because I spent most of it walking around the company and appreciating the fact that even after a year and a half of soft sales and cutbacks and furloughs, I have wonderful people working for me. They care. They are committed. They understand the whole customer–staff–company triangle, where all of the legs support each other.

If you read books on great companies, they usually leave out a dirty little secret. It doesn't make for good public relations — like talking about how you "empower people" or how your "greatest assets" are your people. Both of these well–worn clichés are true. What is also true is that it's hard to build a great company with the wrong people.

When you have the right people, business is much easier. I know because I have tried it both ways.

what is it with my tree posts?

"song of the open road" by ogden nash (1902-1971)
i think that i shall never see
a billboard lovely as a tree.
indeed, unless the billboards fall,
i'll never see a tree at all.
(so true!)

wala lang. hahaha actually, i was searching kasi wood furnitures. i know there's narra and there's mahogany. affordable wood furnitures that i see are made of tanguile or lauan and i don't know what kind of wood/tree are they.

so yun, i'm not familiar with trees (or wood) kaya i did a litte research. tanguile or lauan or philippine mahogany, is in fact, not a mahogany. matibay din but not mahogany-tibay. hehe dami pang characteristics and baka maging wood expert na ko kung ituloy ko pa. and then i came across nga this list of famous trees from wikipedia.

of which it mentioned of 2 trees from the philippines. the baletes at the balete drive for its white lady sightings -- seen the trees and thank god, not the white lady; then the twin narra trees in rizal high school which saw the progress of the school from 1901 and survived the onslaught of world war II. this twin narra trees, i have yet to see. and i will, promise.
.
and then i 've just discovered that the poem "trees" was by a man. haha. all along, i thought joyce kilmer was a woman. alfred joyce kilmer pala siya. sus!
.
atleast ngayon alam ko na hehe

chickening? pigging? fishing?

my heart bleeds for the whales but who am i to judge while enjoying lechon cebu? adobong manok? or foie gras to some? isn't those just the same as this?

beurremanie's photostream

they are right that the whales have lived a life in liberty before they were killed. while our pigs lived a miserable life in captivity. i wonder which is cruel, being bred to be killed for the purpose of serving another life (for food) or lived in liberty then to be killed because of tradition?

but if they are only doing it now because of tradition, maybe, it's about time to leave that tradition behind. if it's all for the food, i ammend, which would not happen because there are a lot of other food sources now. but then again, traditions are sometimes more important than food for some. hayy... hirap noh.

they claim that whales are not yet extinct, are we to believe that? we do not pet them. we do nothing to protect them. in fact we are doing everything to alter and destory their natural habitat, so how can we say that they are not yet extinct? what about the other species that accidentally were included in the hunt? the dolphins?
i glimpsed about "whaling" on the discovery channel a couple of nights ago. i didn't pay that much attention cause i'm busy playing 7 wonders (hehe). all i know is that this whaling is also prevalent in japan and that there are groups who were trailing these whalers.
.
hmm... kaya ko bang maging vegetarian? kayo?
.
on a separate note, have you heard about the possibly last indochinese tiger, who was killed and eaten by a man? 2010 is the year of, guess what, tiger (2010, metal tiger, to officially start on feb 15).

how's this for a new year's resolution?

my sister sent me this email some time last year. it contains very disturbing pictures and maybe some of you has already received this too.

here are the pictures and the captions from the email i received.
~~~ ooo ~~~~
it is a big shame. the sea is stained in red and in the mean while its not because of the climate effects of nature.
tt's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent calderon dolphins.
this happens every year in feroe island in denmark. In this slaughter, the main participants are young teens. Why? To show that they are adults and mature ...
in this big celebration, nothins is missing for the fun. everyone is participating in one way or antoher, killing or looking at the cruelty "supporting like a spectator".
is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, is near extinction and they get near men to play and interact. in a way of pure friendship.
they don't die instantly, they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hooks. and at that time, the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible (comparable) with the cry of a new born child.
but he suffers and there's no compassion till this swee being slowly dies in its own blood.
it's enough! we will send this mail until this email arrives in any association defending the animals, we wont only read. that would make us accomplices, viewers. take care of the world, it is your home.
pano ba maging manager?
during one of my kpi discussions this week, i was asked by this question. of course, everybody wants to be somebody someday. and so somehow, it crossed his/her mind, that he/she somehow sees her/him self as a manager.
im not sure what made him/her ask that question. im not sure if he/she sees that im having a great time being a manager. or that it seems to be an easy job. or maybe he/she think that im earning big time, yet im doing nothing. or maybe nga naman, syempre, we all have to move on and this is one career he/she wants to pursue. anywya, i dont know the answer cause i didnt ask.
so pano nga ba? i dont know. i didnt plan to be one. haha, that's the irony of it. with regards to how i should run my life, i dont have a plan. oxymoron noh? nasa management line ako, pero wala akong plano sa buhay ko. yup, i live each day as it come. short term planning, meron. pero life's road map. wala.
anyway, going back to that question.
i dont have an answer. i just told her/him the realities of being a manager, in my own honest and humble opinions and based na rin siguro sa aking skills and knowledge and experiences.
and i thought, i can best explain it to her by comparing my experiences as a project manager and as a functional manager...
as a project manager, i can say that i have clear objectives and deliverables. and feeling ko mas in-control ako sa mga pangyayari. i can plan. if there would be adjustments, i can prettily adjust and adapt to it.
i don't have to worry about the career of my team, or their personal and professional development. i dont need to rate them subjectively. i can establish metrics that we can all agree on, in black and white. if there would be gray areas, very minimal na lang.
if there would be someone that doesnt seem to fit in within the team, i can always ask for resource replacement.
but as a functional manager, it's hard to plan for their individual career development. i have to strike a balance between management's objectives and priorities versus my team's necessities and concerns.
i can plan, of course. but the risks/dependencies involved are much broader than managing a project team.
expectations on me as a manager both by the management and my team's end are somewhat undefined and gray. not unlike in project management that the end goal is simply deliver the project, on time, within the budget and with agreed requirements.
in project management, i dont have to please anyone. i just have to deliver. as a functional manager, i have to learn soft skills. i have to see through people. i have to listen. i have to be emphatic. the development of one is different from the other. how one sees things maybe conflicting to the other.
i thought, mas madali maging functional manager. cause there'll be no pressing deadlines. less stressful. i can go home early. i can take a leave anytime i want to.
i dont know if i have to be thankful pero my team pretty knows what they want. they're intelligent. smart. adaptable. i think ako pa nga ang natututo sa kanila. really.
often times, i doubt my capabilities and skills in managing my team. i feel like im not contributing to the team. as much as i can, i try to get their inputs so that i can improve.
all i know is, much like parenting, there is no exact formula in managing a team, functionally. people are different from each other, just like offsprings. so i have to learn in stride. adjust and adapt to each one of them.
i dont know. im still young on this position. siguro masasagot ko rin ng tama ang tanong nya, in-time.
bakit nakakalungkot ang dapithapon?
hindi ko alam kung ako lang ang nakakaramdam ng ganito pero may kakaibang dala ang dapithapon. parang may binubuhay siyang damdamin na nagmumula sa kaibuturan ng kalooban ko na hindi ko alam kung saan nanggagaling.
kahit mag-isa o kahit may kasama, pag dapithapon na, parang nagbabalik ang mga alala ng nakaraan. nung bata pa ako at naglalaro sa mga bundok ng buhanginan habang tinatawag ng nanay kasi oras na ng pag-uwi. mga panahong tapos na ang klase at oras na ng paglalaro. mga panahong may kahawak-kamay. mga panahong nakikipagkuwentuhan. nung mga panahong parang mas magaang ang buhay... hindi naman sa hindi ako masaya sa aking buhay at kalalagyanan ngayon. pero meron talagang kakaibang dulot ang dapithapon... hayy..
bakit nga kaya? dahil ba nakalipas na naman ang isang maghapon? dahil nalagas na naman ang isang dahon sa puno ng aking buhay? dahil kung ano man ang nagawa at nangyari sa maghapon na ito ay hindi ko na mababago at hindi na mababalikan?
bakit nga kaya?
sigurado ako, sa mga darating na dapithapon, ang maiisip ko naman ay ang mga sandaling na magkasama kami ni aquim. na karga karga ko siya habang nakatayo kami dito sa terasa at dinadama ang samyo ng malamig-mainit na hangin sa aming balat, ang paghihip nito sa aming mga buhok. habang nakatanaw kami sa ulap..at sa papalubog na araw. malamang, ang alaalang ito ay magpapangiti sa akin, balang araw... sa isang dapithapon.
baket kaya sila ganon?
i am in the series of asking questions, so please bear with me...
the other night, i was leafing through the latest preview magazine and i chanced upon this ad for the new samsung phone (forgot what model). i'm not particulary interested with the phone, but what made me notice it was one of its features, it says that it runs in Windows Mobile 6.1 professional.
my atom exec runs in windows mobile 5.0 ( i think), the then-latest version of windows mobile, so i was quite surprise to know that there is already a new version.
so i then switched to microsoft site, to learn more about the new version and to see if i can upgrade to it. but when i logged on the microsoft mobile site, there is still no link for an upgrade. still the old links i see everytime i visit the site. so i think, why not visit the 02 site to see if they have something to offer about this.
lo and behold, when i tune in to their site, this is what is saw. apparently, my atom exec is now one of their DISCONTINUED PRODUCTS. what the f...
okay, fine. no problem if they will no longer offer atom exec. i don't mind. but what's the catch? verbatim: Discontinued products have limited support. Please note that repair is subject to availability of parts. No swaps.
EH SINO BA ME SABING I-DISCONTINUE NILA YUNG PRODUCT!!!! BAKET BA SILA GAGAWA-GAWA NG PRODUCT, IBEBENTA NILA TAPOS IDIDISCONTINUE NILA TAPOS LALAGYAN LAGYAN NILA NG LIMITED SUPPORT???? PANO NAMAN KAMING MGA NAUTO NILANG BUMILI NG LETSENG PHONE NA TO!!!! PANO KUNG MAGKAPROBLEMA KAMI, KANYA KANYA NA LANG KAMI NG PUNTA SA GREENHILLS???!!!!
hayy.. nakakainis talaga.. grrrrr.... although i am still quite satisfied with my phone, and so far, after 18 months of using it, i still haven't encountered any problem with it, save for its battery life, nakakainis lang na ganon ang post-sales services nila...
what does a poor consumer do after learning this, wala. e di hope and pray that the atom exec won't fail me. that it won't break up on me. not until i'm satisfied with its service. this phone should serve me up to the last cent that i paid for it. huh! this phone could have bought me one designer bag huh!
now i'm thinking if i should have bought HP or palm. hmm.. i don't have plans of buying another phone or pdaphone per se. wala pang budget.
so ano na ngayon, atom EX-ec na ang phone ko? or atom EK-EK?
.
mahal pa kaya ni sharon si gabby?
baket kasi yung mga comments nya (pag nag cocomment siya) eh parang nanggagaling sa isang taong who hasn't gotten over an ex?
nagtatanong lang po!
SUSUNOD!
ano gagawin ko?
one month na lang , birthday na ni aquim. wala pa kong nagagawa. hehehe. sabihin nyo napakawalang kwenta kong ina, nasa bahay na nga lang, hinde pa asikasuhin ng maayos ang party preparation ng anak. eh yun na nga eh. nasa bahay nga ako kaya ang hirap mag plan. siyempre, hinde naman ako nanunuod lang ng tv sa bahay noh. nag aalaga ako ng bata kaya ang hirap mag asikaso.
pero ang talagang dilemma ko, hinde ko alam kung ano ang gagawin ko. gusto kong icelebrate ng maayos ang birthday ni aquim pero sana yung minimal lang ang kalat na ma i-incur. alam mo yon? can i get away with balloons? parang sayang lang kasi. itatapon lang, dagdag lang sa kalat ng mundo. magstandee pa ba kami? ano naman gagawin namin dun after the party? eh yung tarp nga ni aquim nun binyag nya, ayun nakatambak sa house namin? alam mo yun? gagastusan mo para maging kalat. yon. yun ang iniisip ko.. pwede bang magmukhang birthday party na hinde na masiyadong makalat? yung tipong necessities lang talaga?
hinde ba naman magmukhang kawawa si aquim kung bare ang party nya? hayy...tsk.. baka balang araw, pag nakita nya birthday pictures nya , sabihin nya, momy ano ba naman klaseng birthday party to.. walang kaayos ayos.. eh kasi ganon nga... kelangan party with conscience.. tsk.. ang mga kalat kasi.. tsk..
di ko talaga alam. actually, sa food, sa venue, sa invites ok na. dun ako nag iisip sa decor, sa lootbag (bag as in bag ba or paper bag na lang?). muka bang kawawa kung paper bag lang? nagtingin nako sa sa papemelroti, recycled paper bag , 15 pesos isa. mas ok na ba yun? kesa yung mga backpack/lunchbag na plastic? na hinde ko alam kung gagamitin pa ng mga batang bisita. im sure marami na silang ganon... hayy...
giveaways pa, hinde ko din alam. anong giveaway ang hinde masasayang.. yung hinde itatambak lang nila as kalat sa house nila. alam mo yun.. yung ang problema ko.
me ininquire na nga akong mga events organizer or party decor provider. sinabi ko na din sa kanila yun theme, pero sabi ko , dilemma ko is gusto ko minimal lang. hinde ko lang masabi na onteng kalat lang. hehe eh kasi baka pag sabihin kong 'kalat', sabihin nila, kalat ba ang tingin mo sa negosyo namin?! hehe hayyy.. ano .. ano ang gagawin ni mommy?
